A possible explanation, in one limited context, for the existence of “bikini armor”

snailchimera:

Moonsilver is a magical material in the Exalted setting. It is the superior metal the shapeshifting Lunars most easily attune to, and when attuned to, it alters shape to perfectly suit its bearer. Moonsilver weaponry and armor is always an ideal shape and scale for an attuned user, even if that user suddenly changes from a mouse to an elephant.

During the High First Age, there were many luxury items made with magical materials for the use of the Exalted who ran Creation. Some of these items would seem absolutely ludicrous in the Age of Sorrows, e.g. a set of silverware made with orichalcum. In a time of power and plenty for Lunar Exalts (less so than the Sun Kings, but still), I guarantee someone with a Lunar exaltation decided they would never put up with a bra that didn’t fit quite right ever again.

Maybe moonsilver was incorporated into the cloth. Maybe some kind of padding was put over a metal frame. Maybe moonsilver doesn’t chafe, given the way it shifts to accommodate the wearer, and thus a comfortable and effective bra could be made of moonsilver alone. Mundane materials used in the making of a moonsilver bra could have rotted away over time. Regardless, many thousands of years pass, and artifacts made of moonsilver which are clearly meant to be worn are uncovered by treasure hunters, archaeologists, extremely lucky wanderers, or even new Exalts. The Age of Sorrows is a violent time, and functional artifacts of the First Age are most prized when they have military applications. It would be natural in this time to assume something made of one of the superior metals, which fits over the chest, is meant to be some kind of armor. It certainly sells better and sounds more impressive as a conversation piece when labeled as such. We know canonically (Wonders of the Lost Age) that Dragon Blooded lords display First Age things in their houses without having any clue what they are, for status points.

Meanwhile, Lunar elders are divided into two camps; amused, and embarrassed on behalf of all Creation. Fortunately an exalt class oriented around survival produces people with the common sense to wear actual armor, whether they realize the origin of the “bikini armor” or not.

I’m playing Exalted, which is a game where the laws of physics are more like vague suggestions whispered softly for PCs, but I’d still like to use reality as a starting point. So. I’d like a character of mine to use a polearm of some kind, and I’d like her fighting style to focus on keeping enemies at polearm length, making it exceedingly difficult for anyone to get close to her from any direction. Bonus points for fluid/circular movements. Can you rec some actual polearm techniques to research?

howtofightwrite:

Wushu or Shaolin staff techniques come to mind, though any traditional staff form should give you some ideas. This video is good first primer for Shaolin staff techniques. In general, Youtube is a pretty good source for basic examples of staff forms. Pick a style, search that with “staff,” and see what you find.

Adapting those techniques to polearms is basically a non-option in the real world, but it fits with the setting’s feel, and isn’t out of range for an Exalt.

Going back and looking at the recommendations in the core book is also probably a good idea. Both editions suggest Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Ninja Scrollas general references. There’s usually a few other Wuxia films mixed into their recommendations. And, while I’m usually loathe to recommend anime under any circumstances, it is a major influence on how the setting is put together.

Also, read The Art of War. They keep recommending it, and so do I; it will help you create better villains, and smarter heroes.

There is a weird little setting footnote. Technically any weapon can be made from the five magical materials, but there are almost no official polearm artifacts (that I’m aware of). This is more significant because when an Exalt uses a melee charm with a second age weapon, it rarely survives the experience (I think the technical rule is “never.”) There’s actually a pretty consistent theme in the setting for physics poking it’s head in and ruining your day whenever you’re not expecting it. Keep that in mind, and use it to mess with your players.

There are a couple polearms in the Wonders of the Lost Age sourcebook. Including a force projecting weapon that will knock enemies back, and a four dot artifact halberd that’s designed to cleave through densely packed waves of enemies. Because, you know, Solars aren’t in a fight until they’ve leveled six city blocks.

Independent of that it’s worth remembering that each kind Exalt has their own Martial Art, and that what Exalted considers a “martial art,” is a mostly unarmed hand to hand style. Scroll of the Monk is the basic martial arts primer for the setting, but it also includes some of the most horrifically broken charms in the game. So it might be worth looking at, but be very careful about letting your players pick off the menu.

To writers, I do recommend Exalted as a resource when you’re working on epic fantasy. There’s a lot really good suggestions for a fantasy world having to deal with godlike superheros, and, as with White Wolf’s other games, some pretty sharp world building, you really can learn from. Also, this is very much not Tolkien; the setting takes a lot of tone from Greek and Chinese myth and classical literature, along with elements of Shinto, to create something really unique.

Exalted Achievements

Step 1. Grab a magic deck. Step 2. Draw three cards. Step 3. Make a character based on that.

I think you meant: Step 1 find your magic cards

Step 2: Grab your only Magic Deck

Step 3: Draw three cards

Step 4:

Velhagen is what is known as a frosted Griffin; a fierce and icy race of creature known for settling in the mountains. Frosted Griffins are friendly creatures, but are never to be underestimated.

Velhagen lives on an isolated island in the south and has been slowly freezing the island with their presence. The slow timing has caused other creatures to better acclimatize and they seem not to show any concern regarding the growing chill.

Velhagen lives alone, an odd choice for a frosted Griffin, but has shown no sign of an extended desire to leave her island home for the company of others. They do not remember how they ended up here, only that there were once others like them before the island became their home.

They keep their skills sharp by hunting clever fish that live in the surrounding sea.

Second day of Christmas

somewhere-in-the-dungeon:

It had to be a surprise.

Hestus had seen Hope’s gaze linger on the dress in the store window. It was unusual for them to come into a city this big, but they had needed a map of the area and that wasn’t to be found in the hinterlands. It was even more unusual for Hope to so obviously, clearly, unreasonably want a thing. Snow had begun to pile itself higher and higher on her shoes and shoulders before she turned away from the window, and cheerfully went about checking that Hestus was still bundled up against the cold, pretending she hadn’t spent half a minute with her jaw standing open.

I wish someone looked at me like that, came the first uncharitable thought. Then- Nah, that means she wants something. She’s already got me.

“Can you believe some people have the nerve to charge money for something like that?” A passing noblewoman commented to her friends. “It’s like four ape men tried to make their own and they just kept adding things! It’s soooooo last season.” Without thinking about it, Hestus slipped an invisible edge along her shoelaces and then across a few choice knotts in her ensomble, the tool more an extension of will than a real blade. The next time she sat down, he figured the whole thing would probably fall apart. Still, the damage was mostly done.

“C’mon Hestus, lets get inside. You’ll get frostburned again.” Hope was holding another of the large overcoats out to him, and he slipped into it grudgingly. They were heavy and awkward, and he couldn’t get at his tools without cutting through the sleeves. Still, every inch of exposed metal was rapidly cooling to the northern tempatures, and he had been feeling the cold of his artificial arm and leg growing against the maimed sockets more and more since the wind had picked up.

“Yeah, alright.” Hestus took one last look at the dress, deliberately burning the details into his mind.

Feverish nights, working out of sight and dodging Hope’s guardianship when he needed supplies. Days spent being as obstinate and ignorant as he could, dragging out more time finding the map. Hestus was unused to working with cloth, and more importantly unused to working on something so purely aesthetic. He just couldn’t get the point of a dress. It wasn’t solid armour, the least god was almost useless, there wasn’t any advantage to working magical materials into it. By the maker, it didn’t even have pockets! Thrice he resisted the urge to mess with the design, the reinforce the seams with moonsilver or to work eldritch patterns of sorcery into the stitching. Once he realized he’d begun writing the names of spirits of guardianship in old realm across the back and had to painstakingly cut the threads loose.

The material was even harder. Normally he’d work with whatever he had to hand, but even though there were kitchen rags he suspected he could repurpose, he shied away from using them. Instead, he accepted a gift from a noble who’s son hadn’t been able to walk. The metal leg he made for the child cost him time, and he had to fight to keep from just walking away as the brat took it as a matter of course. Still, it was worth it to work with proper material at the onset. And it was worth it to see Hope’s shoulders shift and relax when the boy took his first hesistant steps. He just had to take the payment quickly, before she noticed. It felt weird, hiding something from her. It also felt weird using money, but a lot of things felt weird.

His first thought for the dye was blood, but somehow that didn’t seem to convey quite what he felt. Still, none of the places in town had the shades he needed. Working with one of the shopkeeps, he helped improve her process for extracting the colours, in exchange for all the pink he needed. The shopkeep seemed almost relieved to have someone take the ink off her hands. Apparently, it wasn’t a big seller. Hestus couldn’t understand why- it was Hope’s favourite colour. Why wouldn’t everyone want it? Still, their loss.

Finally, it was ready. He’d checked everything twice, thre times, four, each time correcting minior stitchwork or adding hints of paler red. He could feel the blood pounding through his body as he placed it on the frame. He’d considered wrapping it somehow, but it seemed odd to wrap a wrapping. Was that a thing people did? He didn’t know. He left it in Hope’s room, standing where it’d be the first thing she saw when she woke up, and staggered off to sleep.

He awoke to a soft voice, quieter than the sound of the new snowfall outside, but one his senses were always attuned to, more tightly a part of his mind than the pair of artifact limbs he used every day.

“Hestus, did you make this?”

He rolled over, to see a vision in pink. Hope stood, her head rising out of the layers and layers of tassels, flaps, and ties like a figurine on top of a wedding cake. There was more fabric hanging off of it than there was as part of the main dress, and even more was used in supporting the whole thing.

“I uh, thought you’d like it. If you don’t, er, do you like it?”

Hope smiled. “Of course I do. But, Christmas was yesterday. I wasn’t sure if you celebrated it. I didn’t get you anything.”

Hestus looked at her smile, perfectly charming. For the moment, there was no thought of danger or of fighting in it. “Yeah you did.”

A Little More About Myself

Hi! I’m Summoner-Starlight but you can call me:

Bean, Star, Nova, Bat Lady, Cat, Koko, or Summoner

If you know my real name, I kindly ask that you do not refer to me by it on the internet because I am not comfortable with sharing that information; I never have been (call it paranoia, whatever, doesn’t matter).

For anyone interested in me personally, I’m a cisgender female polyamorous panromantic pansexual pisces who loves bats, monster people (especially vampires), space, fantasy, and a whole bunch more stuff that would take me forever to list.

I’m a Game Design and Development Major who loves all manner of fun and fantastical things and whose personal goals are to share the inner workings of my own mind with people who might find me even the least bit interesting.

What This Blog is For:

This blog is for anything and everything with the exception of Flight Rising which is covered by my side blog Starlight-Flight

I use this blog to talk about my life, share personal experiences, reblog things I think are pretty rad, and share my creativity with anyone who wants to be a part of that.

Many of my posts are centered around my creative life, including various RPGs I play. I also do some roleplaying here invovling various settings including Homestuck and Exalted. Drabbles (small pieces of fiction) are also common place.

If you are ever interested in roleplaying with me all you have to do is let me know! I’m usually happy to spin out a story with anyone. Do note, however, I’m not a very good instigator so it is usually best for you to make the first move.

I also occasionally take drabble requests for my characters or will answer any questions you might have about the various fictional universes I write about/any of the characters involved therein. Don’t ever be afraid to invade my ask box (believe me somewhere-in-the-dungeon does it all the time).

Connected Blogs:

It is important to note that you might catch me interacting with a few blogs more than others. These blogs tend to be close ‘real life’ friends I have met through college or other tumblr users who I have connected with on a personal level. We use tumblr as a fun means of communication and spend a lot of time sharing our individual creativity with each other here.

These blogs include:

somewhere-in-the-dungeon – A close personal friend that I am a tad antagonistic towards. He helps to inspire my creativity and pushes me to break out of my comfort zone with tough questions (but a good attitude). He loves RPGs and is very friendly!
hyperionnebulae – Another close personal friend and something like my mind twin. She’s very sweet and always manages to get me very excited about my creative mindset as well as how all of my own characters interact with hers. She is an artistic animal lover who manages to keep her blog a fun and positive place.
greensunprincess – My lovely fiancee! GSP manages our Exalted group and has been a major source of inspiration to me over the years. She encourages me to build and create on an already fantastic universe and beyond. She often turns to me for inspiration as well and we work very hard to do what we love. She is a huge MLP and Kill la Kill fan and her blog reflects a lot of that as well as other various anime (she is very into anime). She is, however, rather shy.
prettypiexes – Zee has to be my closest tumblr friend (at least I think so) and I really appreciate them. Zee is exceptionally straightforward and honest and is an incredibly amazing person. Zee is also super into character creation (their fantroll blog has so many trolls it’s amazing) and creates powerful characters with interesting stories. Zee has also always been particularly supportive and has helped me try to branch out a little more into an unfamiliar community and for that I am thankful.

Important Tags:

I try to tag things fairly liberally and I apologize if some things are over/under tagged. I also will voice little opinions in my tags.

#me – covers things representative of myself including the occasional picture
#Nova Roleplays – is my general rp tag. All rps are covered under this tag for those who want to sample my various rp styles or who are generally uninterested in this aspect of my blogging. All rps are also tagged with a character name and all but my fantroll rps are tagged with a setting (this may be subject to change)
#Exalted – this tag covers everything in the Exalted Universe, a tabletop RPG I play on Saturdays with my friends. This includes original posts as well as things I’ve found in the Exalted community that I think are cool
#LTAE & #Let’s Talk About Exalted – These tags cover my series of the same name where I talk about Exalted as an RPG and work to introduce the game to people who might not have heard of it. It’s a complex rpg, but the concepts and setting are very fun
#drabble – the tag I use for my small fictional writings. Most drabbles are kept under a ReadMore due to their length.
#silly things – this tag covers anything that isn’t roleplay related

I also tag some posts with various character names, indicating that I was reminded of that character when I saw the post. I tag long posts and various triggers as well.

If you are concerned about triggers that you have found I did not tag, please let me know. Most triggers are tagged starting with TW: but some things like bugs are not. When talking about Exalted I will also occasionally use the tag TW: Abyssals. I highly recommend blocking this tag if you are easily upset by heavy gore, terrible slurs, and general all around terrible things. Abyssals were designed to be atrocious in behavior (and occasionally really disgusting).

Wrap Up:

That covers this blog. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns do not hesitate to contact me!

Enjoy your stay!

Cleric Spells are Fun

In Dungeon World, new Cleric spells are unlocked at levels 3, 5, 7, and 9 and become progressively more awesome and absurd

Amber is a level 5 Cleric and her new spells are perfect for our present situation!

Allow me to explain:

First, Amber is a Magical Girl (a branch of a major religion that is comprised of young girls granted magical strength and abilities by their god). Magical girls, due to lore things we’ve established, cannot technically die. Instead they revert to gemstones (containing their souls) or become terrifying creatures of despair known as Witches (thanks Madoka).

Recently, Amber and Jean came to blows (read as  ‘singular-failed-blow’) over an issue regarding the in game religious differences. Amber became furious that Jean would believe Death to be a concept that should be accepted as inevitable and un-feared which, is heresy as far as Amber is concerned.
Amber attacked Jean for his decision but wound up ultimately being talked down from any real violence by her companion, Scarlet, as well as Jean himself. Scarlet reminded Amber that their duty was to spread hope, even to those who could not see the good they were trying to do. Amber reflected on those thoughts, and though she still desires to kill Jean has accepted that Scarlet was right and all she can do is hope that he sees the error of his ways and repents.

Of course, she’s happy to speed that process along.

One last important note before I get into Amber’s plans, there is a separate religion also in play. While Amber supports the Unnamed God of Hope and Jean supports death, a few party members support Mother Nature. Nature supporters see death as natural and tend to be on death’s side.

So, with all of that in mind:

Two spells received by Amber at level five include Contagion and Trap Soul. Contagion causes an ongoing sickness of your choice to the target so long as you hold the spell. Trap Soul traps a ghost or the soul of the recently dead in a gemstone until you free it.

Essentially, Amber’s plan is for Jean to die so she may trap his soul in a gem. If she’s successful (and can get a little help from her god) she hopes she can attach the gem to a vessel which would make Jean a magical boy. She believes this would allow Jean to see the world from her perspective and allow him to repent. It also would mean Jean would not be able to die and depriving him of that satisfaction is a sweet victory for the angry side of Amber.

Of course, trying to kill Jean herself might cause….problems among the party (for whatever reasons). That’s where Contagion comes in! Nothing is more natural than disease, so what a better way to kill Jean? None. There is no better way. This plan is flawless (provided people don’t try to stop her).

TLDR: Amber is crazy and needs to be stopped.

I suppose I could tell you a story, worshippers of Internet.

Once, there was the Divine Ignition.

In the Now of Divine Ignition, one of the Principles stirred. The Shinma wept, for the moment he opened his eyes was the moment where the Subjugation started.

He asked his foster parents, the Reality and the Conception, the first question.

“Who am I?”

“You are Mardukth, He Who Holds In Thrall,” In unison they replied, and thus were bound to repeat it every time. For it was Oramus’ word it was his first, and then-only binding, and Cytherea was beyond even such trivialities as swearing fealty to another.

“What am I?” He asked once again, this time directing this question to the World-Tree, the only thing almost as big as he was.

“You are the Principle of Subjugation, Mardukth.” Szoreny answered, struggling to contain the reflection of this truth, his quicksilver leaves cracking under the weight of the Beasts gaze, as he admired himself without understanding.

“Where am I?” He asked the River of All Torments.

“In Zen-Mu, the bastion of What Is, built upon your ego!” Screamed Adrian, as her circular path was widening with Mardukths every question, and so her strength needed to protect her siblings from Chaos was taxed more and more.

“What is my purpose?” He asked the Boar That Twists the Skies.

“To bind all under yourself.” Isidoros spat out, with infinite rage, for he felt his own Principle lessened by Mardukths very existance. For the first time, the unassailable Might felt treathened, and he refused to speak to speak with Mardukth ever again.

“Who are you?” He asked the Maker of Prime Wonders.

“We are others like you, but of different natures.” Explained Autochthon, who was healthier back then but still fearful for existance of his works under the careless monster.

“Where do you stand?” He asked the Principle of Perfect Hierarchy.

“Under you, as it is your nature to subjugate all things.” She Who Lives in Her Name replied, coldly, for his nature was such that her beateous order could never rule.

“Why do you bow to me?” He asked the Shadow of All Things

But the Dragons Shadow could not answer, for the answer would be either a lie or his destruction, and he could not lie before Mardukth, and could not accept any chains for he was Freedom and Subversion of all laws. He swore within his heart of hearts instead: “I will be your undoing, not once, but thrice, and shall never bow.”

The Mountain and the Beast Upon It wasn’t satisfied and struck the Dragons Shadow, though the shadows slid under his fingers and sunk into roots of Szoreny, and into Kimbery who worked tirelessly to dissolve the Mountain of which the Beast stood, but it was unbreakable and she was bound just like all save the Dragons Shadow. She struggled against the bindings and thus, in her doomed attempt, the Dark Principle found her beautiful and beloved.

“If you help me I can find someone who would chain us not. But this would require for you to part your sacred Waters to let the Fire Invisible and Sky Infinite pass through unharmed.”

Kimbery always hated the fire, and was mistrustful of sky, but she hated chains even more and hated that Madukth didn’t make her, the Principle of Strife, more relevant despite using her inventions, so she parted her waters for him.

And thus the Dragons Shadow begged the two young powers, the Principles of Law and Rule, the ones he always knew will come one day for he woke up with the promise of joyous and fullfilling rebellion against them, to ascend to Zen-Mu and dethrone Mardukth.

Through the parted waters of Infinite Ocean, Theion and Cecelyne, siblings of Rule and Law, had arrived before the Mountain and before the Beast that stood on it. Mardukth, the fool he always was, asked them one question.

“Do you know who I am, newcomers?”

“Yes, yes we do.” Answered the Firmament Infinite, but she was not bound

“You are my servant, by my nature to be greater than all the other things and rule over them.” Said The King of All Kings, and it was the moment he had proven himself worthy of this title.

And thus unchained we were no more.
