Since my lovely friend Ami is doing some character exploration, I think this calls for another look into the beauty that is the Cityverse.
This time, we’re covering the lives of a charming (if not a bit cliche) couple separated by the strands of fate.
Strap in! It’s a long one under the cut!
-cut-
Within the universe that the City belongs to there are Angels and Demons. Though there are many belief systems, consisting of many deities (all of which hold some ground in this universe) the most noticeable in the area is the influence of some form of Christian mythos.
As a species, Angels are mostly confined to Heaven with the exception being a class called Guardian Angels who are assigned to two or three mortals and charged with helping them improve their lives. Every mortal has a Guardian, but sometimes even they cannot directly interfere with the lives of their mortal. Sometimes they are close ‘human’ friends. Other times they are a calming breeze.
Angels come in as much variety as humans, but wing colors flow through a range of pastels with white and powder blue being the most common. Hair matching ones wings is also a common occurrence, and wings can be hidden magically to keep up a mortal disguise.
Demons and Devils are residents of Hell, ruled over by a man named Lucifer who is as powerful as many ‘gods’ despite many refusing to refer to him as such. Lucifer claims to have fallen from Heaven after making a heavy decision, and now claims he shall gain vengeance against the being that wronged him those many eons ago. Hell has a series of levels, each more gruesome than the last. In the deepest are banished demon souls, held imprisoned for failures until one deems it necessary to summon them again.
Demons come to the world to cause trouble and corrupt mortals. Where Guardians may seek to have them do good, demons seek to tempt them into evil.
This back and forth comes with good reason. Both sides are even in their ‘armies’. Souls who are pure of heart (often martyrs) have potential to be reborn as angels for the side of heaven. Souls truly darkened by hate (Hitler is the best example) have the potential to be remade as demons. Most of this fighting keeps mortals somewhere in the middle, to return again and again as mortals.
This gives us enough information to introduce Chris and Zoey. Zoey is a guardian angel charged with watching over a young boy named Charlie. Charlie, half brother of Marley St. Jane, is half demon, half vampire, and one of a kind. With potential to be good, Zoey took the case.
Chris is the other half brother, and son of Lucifer. He was born from the last good that remained within the fallen Angel and it showed in his rebellious nature. Chris escaped from Hell and found Marley. The three of them live in Marley’s house.
Chris and Zoey were both posing as Highschool students when they met; Chris to keep a low profile, and Zoey to keep an eye on Charlie in the middle school. Each mistaking the other for a human, they became friends who ate Vegan lunches together and hung out on weekends. Chris offered Zoey the perfect opportunity to be around her charge.
This was, until an incident where Chris lost control and caused some major damage in the neighborhood. Chris was outed as a demon, no longer able to hide his demonic heritage. Zoey was terrified, but fought him as was her duty as an angel, thereby revealing herself as well. The two stopped seeing each other but Zoey still had a job to do.
A few years passed without further incident and the two went back to talking. Chris apologized, he had never meant to hurt anyone, and Zoey was taken aback. Demons never apologized. Chris was different. Their friendship mended over the following months and, on Zoey’s end, blossomed into something more. Chris knew when Zoey admitted her feelings that their relationship would be unsafe, but he had never had anything like her before.
The two dated for some time until Lucifer caught wind of the ordeal and ordered a bounty for his Son’s return to Hell. A small band of demons cornered Chris and sought to banish him. Zoey’s connection to Chris brought her upon the scene as things looked bleak, but he told her there was nothing she could do. That was when one of the other demon’s spoke up.
This demon mentioned that Zoey could try summoning Chris while the banishment was still taking place. This would break the banishment much easier than summoning him from Hell once it had completed. Zoey, for the sake of her love, performed the most forbidden act and everything shone with bright white light.
Chris found himself before the angelic council. For his good deeds and Zoey’s sacrifice, he was made an Angel to protect him from the hands of his father. Unfortunately, due to their distrust of him, his role was an angel of death. Only the dead or dying could see him, and is was his job to escort souls to the beyond to be processed.
Zoey fell from grace, but due to the circumstances of the situation became human rather than demon. She lost all memory of her former life, her mind filled instead with falsehoods. She was then assigned a guardian, in the hopes that one day her soul could be returned to Heaven.
Chris spends the little free time he has watching Zoey, much to her Guardian’s displeasure. He doesn’t look forward to the day he has to guide her soul away. He doesn’t look forward to much of anything anymore.
Marley and Charlie can still see Chris, and try as best as they can to comfort him but to no avail. For now, it seems Lucifer has given up the capture of his boy.
And that’s it. Tragic huh?
See you again next time!
