Cityverse: Bittersweet Wings

Since my lovely friend Ami is doing some character exploration, I think this calls for another look into the beauty that is the Cityverse.

This time, we’re covering the lives of a charming (if not a bit cliche) couple separated by the strands of fate.

Strap in! It’s a long one under the cut!

-cut-

Within the universe that the City belongs to there are Angels and Demons. Though there are many belief systems, consisting of many deities (all of which hold some ground in this universe) the most noticeable in the area is the influence of some form of Christian mythos.

As a species, Angels are mostly confined to Heaven with the exception being a class called Guardian Angels who are assigned to two or three mortals and charged with helping them improve their lives. Every mortal has a Guardian, but sometimes even they cannot directly interfere with the lives of their mortal. Sometimes they are close ‘human’ friends. Other times they are a calming breeze.
Angels come in as much variety as humans, but wing colors flow through a range of pastels with white and powder blue being the most common. Hair matching ones wings is also a common occurrence, and wings can be hidden magically to keep up a mortal disguise.

Demons and Devils are residents of Hell, ruled over by a man named Lucifer who is as powerful as many ‘gods’ despite many refusing to refer to him as such. Lucifer claims to have fallen from Heaven after making a heavy decision, and now claims he shall gain vengeance against the being that wronged him those many eons ago. Hell has a series of levels, each more gruesome than the last. In the deepest are banished demon souls, held imprisoned for failures until one deems it necessary to summon them again.
Demons come to the world to cause trouble and corrupt mortals. Where Guardians may seek to have them do good, demons seek to tempt them into evil.

This back and forth comes with good reason. Both sides are even in their ‘armies’. Souls who are pure of heart (often martyrs) have potential to be reborn as angels for the side of heaven. Souls truly darkened by hate (Hitler is the best example) have the potential to be remade as demons. Most of this fighting keeps mortals somewhere in the middle, to return again and again as mortals.

This gives us enough information to introduce Chris and Zoey. Zoey is a guardian angel charged with watching over a young boy named Charlie. Charlie, half brother of Marley St. Jane, is half demon, half vampire, and one of a kind. With potential to be good, Zoey took the case.
Chris is the other half brother, and son of Lucifer. He was born from the last good that remained within the fallen Angel and it showed in his rebellious nature. Chris escaped from Hell and found Marley. The three of them live in Marley’s house.

Chris and Zoey were both posing as Highschool students when they met; Chris to keep a low profile, and Zoey to keep an eye on Charlie in the middle school. Each mistaking the other for a human, they became friends who ate Vegan lunches together and hung out on weekends. Chris offered Zoey the perfect opportunity to be around her charge.

This was, until an incident where Chris lost control and caused some major damage in the neighborhood. Chris was outed as a demon, no longer able to hide his demonic heritage. Zoey was terrified, but fought him as was her duty as an angel, thereby revealing herself as well. The two stopped seeing each other but Zoey still had a job to do.

A few years passed without further incident and the two went back to talking. Chris apologized, he had never meant to hurt anyone, and Zoey was taken aback. Demons never apologized. Chris was different. Their friendship mended over the following months and, on Zoey’s end, blossomed into something more. Chris knew when Zoey admitted her feelings that their relationship would be unsafe, but he had never had anything like her before.

The two dated for some time until Lucifer caught wind of the ordeal and ordered a bounty for his Son’s return to Hell. A small band of demons cornered Chris and sought to banish him. Zoey’s connection to Chris brought her upon the scene as things looked bleak, but he told her there was nothing she could do. That was when one of the other demon’s spoke up.

This demon mentioned that Zoey could try summoning Chris while the banishment was still taking place. This would break the banishment much easier than summoning him from Hell once it had completed. Zoey, for the sake of her love, performed the most forbidden act and everything shone with bright white light.

Chris found himself before the angelic council. For his good deeds and Zoey’s sacrifice, he was made an Angel to protect him from the hands of his father. Unfortunately, due to their distrust of him, his role was an angel of death. Only the dead or dying could see him, and is was his job to escort souls to the beyond to be processed.

Zoey fell from grace, but due to the circumstances of the situation became human rather than demon. She lost all memory of her former life, her mind filled instead with falsehoods. She was then assigned a guardian, in the hopes that one day her soul could be returned to Heaven.

Chris spends the little free time he has watching Zoey, much to her Guardian’s displeasure. He doesn’t look forward to the day he has to guide her soul away. He doesn’t look forward to much of anything anymore.

Marley and Charlie can still see Chris, and try as best as they can to comfort him but to no avail. For now, it seems Lucifer has given up the capture of his boy.

And that’s it. Tragic huh?
See you again next time!

So Saturday night was Exalted

I was playing Marian, the beautiful runaway from the realm.
The party heads to the desert just outside of town to find a rampaging lunar and his mysterious (yet surprisingly calm) brother.
Our resident lunar/giant snake lady decided to handle the lunar.
Eventually, the two knocked each other out and the ‘mistress’ of this little group showed up
It was apparent this lady was super strong; and Marian made a mistake
Marian made a comment when the lady called her a degenerate. The woman got up in Marian’s face and called her a whore (along with a bit more colorful language)
Stunned and enraged, Marian tried to punch her. She failed.
The lady told her to move.
“Make me”
Marian was hit with enough force to send her through the three foot stone wall 4 yards away.
Marian walked away with only bruises

This is a typical day in Exalted

Cityverse: The Vampire Queen

this title is misleading but I wanted something interesting. She’s not really a queen, or even an important vampire within her coven’s controlled area. She is, however, the most notable vampire in the city because she’s my most solid vampire character.

Who is this lovely lady? Her name is Marley St. Jane and we’ll share more about her after the cut! ((Just be cautious there’s some questionably graphic writing and I don’t want to upset anyone))

-cut-

Let’s start by touching lightly on vampire lore for the setting. The rise of vampires as more than hushed fairytales began during the reign of Vladimir Dracul; a man who impaled his victims on wooden stakes out of a sense of cruel irony, seeing as the man himself was a vampire. It wasn’t long after his death that a young Ilinca Locusta found her parents dead in their home upon returning from market; the murderers still perched over their quiet bodies. Ilinca did not run but she pleaded, wide eyed, at the killers to spare her. They took her life, but granted her eternity as one of their own: as a vampire.

With the vampire population growing, smaller groups broke off ((referred to as covens)) in order to better control territory and food sources. Ilinca was raised like a true daughter, and for the first time in her life felt loved by this odd family. ((This is significant, as Ilinca’s blood family had been abusive))

Ilinca aged slowly, as vampires do, but gained much time to learn about anything that caught her interest. Her coven separated into two and Ilinca was brought to England in order to better divide food sources back home in Romania. Her name was changed to something more English, and she fell in love.

The style of the time, to her, was beautiful. Her family bought her high class fashions and spent hours doing her hair. She loved the sounds of the English people as they spoke, their language so much different than her own. And she met a young playwright who told her magnificent stories and dreamed of fame and fortune. An unfortunate accident led to Ilinca breaking his heart, but she knew she could make it up to him. Due to the circumstances of her turning, Ilinca had the ability to sway the minds of others with eye contact. She ‘convinced’ a young Anne Hathaway to get together with her friend, and picked up the pieces of her broken heart as they lived the life she could not.

Until 1587, much of Ilinca’s time was spent traveling Europe. That was, of course, until the colonization of the Americas. Always one for new adventures, Ilinca and a small sect of her coven made their way across the sea to settle in Virginia. Years beyond that were uneventful. With so little to prey upon, the coven had to be careful about their decisions in the Americas. Wars and sickness ravaged the food supply over the coming years. Immune to the diseases, Ilinca’s people sought to keep the humans alive as best as they could; most for the sake of fresh food, Ilinca because that was in her nature. Having been saved from a terrible fate, she knew that all she wanted to do with her life was help people.

In 1881 Ilinca ((under another new name)) assisted her friend Clara Barton in founding the Red Cross in America. She spent the rest of her life working at one Red Cross or another, moving around and changing her name as circumstance required. World war one brought with it a scuffle between the various Covens of the Americas. Ilinca’s coven argued that there was no need for ‘monstrous’ behavior among vampires, that the modernization of the world was making these crimes obsolete. In the end, what was left Ilinca’s coven was in the minority and went into hiding until WW2.

By then, Ilinca had found her way to the City where she bought a house and, much to public dismay, lived alone. She kept up her job at the local Red Cross, and grew with the times. As technology and fashion changed, she tried to keep up ((always a step or so behind)). In the recent past, she changed her name to Marley St. Jane, bought a computer outfitted with Windows Vista, and drives a used Prius.

Marley sustains herself off of blood that would normally be counted as expired, or nearly expired from the Red Cross ((shelf life is longer for consumption by vampires as long as its refrigerated)). She’s never in need of money though, as the amount of antique’s she’s acquired over the years is astonishing. She sells them if she runs into trouble, or if she needs to clear space.

She currently lives with her half brother ((a half demon/half vampire child still attending middle school)), and her quarter-brother; the son of satan. The three of them live their little lives, trying to be normal.

I have lots of other dumb information about Marley, like her love of Paranormal Teenage Romance novels and similarly based TV shows, but that will have to be for another time because this post is really long….

But that’s what you get when you live as long as Marley has.
